Recognizing the German capital’s potential, the FreeTech Academy embarked on a project in collaboration with Snapchat. Our mission was to create augmented reality lenses that would offer a glimpse into the potential future of Berlin in the year 2033, addressing the pressing issues affecting young people today.
Linking Journalism and Technology:
The FreeTech Academy, a venture spearheaded by the Axel Springer Academy of Journalism and Technology, set out on a new endeavor in the first half of 2023. Combining the expertise of our journalism and tech teams, we aimed to bridge the gap between these two domains and explore the possibilities that emerge from their convergence. By partnering with Snapchat, we sought to harness the power of augmented reality to convey a compelling vision of Berlin's future.

The Snapchat lens became a powerful tool for FreeTech Academy to showcase the potential consequences of climate change. By leveraging augmented reality technology, users were offered a captivating experience that brought the impact of climate change to their immediate surroundings – namely, the Brandenburg Gate. Through the lens, users could witness visual representations of the potential changes that humanity may undergo by 2033. This immersive experience aimed to raise awareness among Snapchat users about the urgent need to address climate change and embrace sustainable practices.
